Artists and Makers open their studios to the public over these three days in September.  For the first time see visiting Street artists from around the country creating live artworks in public, alongside studio groups and the Galleries featured in the free map and programme available from the Information Centre.

These vibrant paintings will be inspired by classic artists from the past, some will be reimagined, offering a tempting glimpse to passers-by, bringing the inside out and the outside in.  Leading international street artist and local lad Dale Grimshaw has promised to join in, fresh from painting in New York, Stockholm and Marseille, he will create an outdoor painting as a gift for the town.

More visual art and crafts can be found in galleries and other unusual places in Todmorden.

The name Todmorden first appears in 1641 and is generally accepted to mean Totta’s boundary-valley, probably a reference to the valley running northwest from the town, although the name “marshy valley of the fox” has also been proposed. The earliest written record of the area is in the Domesday Book (1086), at which time most people were living in scattered farms or in isolated hilltop agricultural settlements. Packhorse trails were marked by ancient stones of which many still survive.
